Discovering Maui
Mt. Haleakala Sunrise

Haleakala Crater on Maui at sunrise

Maui Hawaii Vacation Guide

Maui Has  much to offer the adventurer looking for unique vistas and discoveries.  One can drive from sea level to over 10,000 feet up the lush green slopes of  Mt. Haleakala,  a dormant volcano, where sunrises over the cauldron will seem out of this world!  Windsurfers battle the elements in  Paia at Ho'okipa State Beach providing some great photo opportunity.  The Road To Hana is an unforgettable drive with new panoramas at every turn ...... and there are over 300 of them!  The famous Hawaiian Rainbow is painted in the sky virtually everywhere you look.  Maui County actually consists of 4 major islands: Maui,   Moloka'i,  Lana'i and Kaho'olawe ....... the latter being un-inhabited and used extensively for bombing practice until recently.

This Island  is a favorite destination of many, including this photographer.  Click on the links above to change the header photo.   For most of us who are not looking for a $400.00 a night suite at the Hyatt Regency, a condo in Kahana or Honokowai is an excellent choice!  These areas are on the sunset western coast of Maui very near the Lahaina and the world class resort at Ka'anapali.  A great unit can be had for $95.00 to $155.00 and you have the freedom to cook or not ........ and the unit will have a more "at home" feel.

Maui Hawaii Vacation GuideWhale Season  in these waters is December through May, with February and March being prime time.  My favorite whale watching outfit is run by the Pacific Whale Foundation out of Lahaina Harbor.  Visit their website to see what these folks are all about ....... I know you will want to ride with them too.  The drive to Hana will fascinate you beyond belief.   I tried something new this last trip ....... I purchased a narrated CD which came with a 60 minute video and a informative map, all for $20.00.  I discovered several things about the drive that I had unknowingly passed by on previous drives.  Stop at the Shell station on the corner of Dairy Road and the Haleakala Highway to pick one up.

Legend Says  says that Haleakala Volcano on Maui was once the home of Pele, goddess of fire, who is at the heart of Hawaii's rich mythology.   Chased from her volcanic home on Kauali by her sister Namakaokaha'i, goddess of the sea, Pele fled first to O'ahu and then to Maui's Haleakala where she lived before moving to Kilauea Volcano on the Big Island.  The drive to the summit before sunrise is a must ....... perhaps not every trip, but once for sure.  It will be 40 degrees cooler that the your condo balcony, so plan ahead for your comfort.  It is a beautiful excursion, and a pleasant diversion from the beach scene.  Click on the hyperlink for a brief history on Maui.

Maui Princess at the Old Lahaina LuauActivities Are  plentiful here on Maui but don't be overwhelmed.  Plan to come back again and do some more, rather than try and get it all in on one visit.  The Luau you must not miss while in Maui is The Old Lahaina Luau.  Click on this hyperlink or the photo of Mrs. Parks to the left to go to their website.  This award winning luau has been featured on many television documentaries.  The food and show are legendary and all the Mai Tai you want is included with admission.  If you do nothing else while on Maui, please experience the Aloha spirit as it was meant to be here at The Old Lahaina Luau!

What Else  is there on Maui?  Well, make some discoveries for yourself.  Here are some hints:  The Red Sand Beach,  Club Lana'i,  Molokini,  The Seven Sacred Pools,  Mama's Fish House,   Paniolo Country,  Maui Blanc,  The Maui Ocean Center,  Ahi Poke ................. you get the idea.  Maui "No Ka Oi"  or Maui "Is the best" and the only way for you to find that out is to get there.  Thanks for stopping by and if you have any questions, please drop me an "e".  Aloha!
